Why is bamboo a sustainable material? It's grown without pesticides or chemical fertilisers, it requires no irrigation, it rarely needs replanting, it grows rapidly, it sequesters carbon dioxide and is carbon neutral.
Bamboo is an incredibly strong yet lightweight material. Especially when compared to wood and steel. In Asia, it’s used in place of steel for the construction of buildings and roads or to reinforce concrete. As it’s technically a grass, not a tree, there are no weak points along its length. This makes it stronger and more durable than even the toughest hardwoods.
Rattan is a naturally renewable palm that grows in the tropical regions of Africa and Asia. Rattan grows extremely fast, even up to 2cm per day, meaning it is fully grown and ready to harvest within 2 years. From sourcing the material, to its production it is extremely sustainable but it doesn’t stop there. Once you are done with the rattan furniture, it can then be recycled since it is completely biodegradable.
As well as having natural UV protection, jute grows without the use of fertilisers and pesticides. Not only is it completely biodegradable, but it is also a recyclable fibre. Jute reaches maturity quickly, between 4-6 months, making it an incredibly efficient source of renewable material, and therefore sustainable.
Being a natural plant, seagrass is a very green option as it is both sustainable and biodegradable.
A fast growing tree, Acacia woods are an extremely sustainable wood source, Acacia trees are fast-growing, grow in almost any type of soil, do not need fertiliser, and rarely need pesticides. The beauty and smooth tones of the wood, combined with the lovely colours evokes images of respectability, professionalism and tasteful décor. Every piece of Acacia wood has a unique look due to the variable pattern of its grain.
Mango wood is highly sustainable due to its cultivation as a fruit tree. The trees grow to maturity relatively quickly for a hardwood, reaching maturity after about 15 years. At this point they begin to produce less fruit, or stop altogether.
Mango farmers begin to plant new trees every 7 to 15 years before the older trees become barren. This creates a sustainable cycle of plantation and harvest, with only the unfruitful trees being chopped down. Cultivating mango wood means there is less pressure to use more endangered trees. Fundamentally mango wood is the by-product of an already thriving industry: the mango fruit.
Douglas fir wood is a sustainable material thanks to trees’ carbon sequestration, carbon storage, and biomass energy generation from wood waste. These trees grow fast and last for a long time.
The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibres, including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain. GOTS ensures the organic status of textiles from the harvesting of the raw materials through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing all the way to labelling.
OEKO TEX certified cotton is also the label for sustainably produced textile products. Products carrying the STANDARD 100 label signal trust.
When products are made from recycled materials, whether its glass or wood variations can occur, which makes it even more unique as no two items will be the same - beautiful perfect imperfections.
